Just a few meters away from the cathedral in the main square of Maldonado town you will find an old school building which is considered to be part of the historical estate. This building houses the National Collection of Painting and Sculpture, a sight not to be missed.
The collection includes wonderful pieces donated to the state by Nicolás García Uriburu who was an architect who loved and supported the arts in Uruguay. Works date from the 1800's all the way to 1950 and there are pieces by famed sculptors Heber Ramos Pa, Federico Sonería and Pablo Mañé. There are also great paitings by Uruguay's beloved Blanes and Cuneo.
